TRACK 1 THING THAT MATTERS TO YOU.

There’s a saying in the business world that goes like this, “you can’t manage what you can’t measure.” I’ve also heard it said another way, “it’s hard to get to where you want to go without knowing where you are.”

Both these quotes point to the fact that accomplishments, in business or fitness, don’t happen by accident. It takes an honest inventory of what’s going on now in order to make the necessary changes for the results we want later.

There is a lot of uncovered honesty that comes with tracking simple daily habits. Have you ever tracked how much time you spend on your phone or social media? It can be frightening. You wonder where that time could have been better spent. Multiply that time by the course of a year and it gets REALLY scary. 

Simply saying you want to spend less time on social media won’t solve the problem. You have to put the systems in place that will lead to changes in behavior. Those systems start with an honest tracking of where you are now.

Whatever your goal, start tracking the habits that relate to the goal. Sometimes, the goal/habits relationship isn’t so clear. You can have a goal of not having an energy crash midday but aren’t sure if it relates to sleep, hydration, or nutrition. You may have to track multiple things to figure out what moves the needle most, but at least start with 1.

Let 2024 be the year you get that one thing right that you’ve been trying to nail down for years. Whether it be your sleep quality, nutrition, or commitment to workouts—don’t let another year pass without tracking and making changes. If it matters to you, measure it.
