Athlete of the Month: Ben Miller

Our Male Athlete of the Month for March is Ben Miller! Ben has been a staple in our 540am BeachFit class and gives everything he has every workout. He has already logged 55 workouts in 2021, taking his FitTown total ever so close to the 400 workout mark.

Our coaches admire how smart Ben is in the weights he chooses and the patience he has when it comes to working on form. Ben’s wife Tanya also goes to BeachFit, and it was really cool to learn that being healthy for his family is a main motivation for him to make it to the gym before a typical busy day at work begins.

Ben discovered CrossFit 10 years ago, so he’s been around the gym block and we’re so glad he ended up here with us at FitTown. We’re grateful to have Ben and his family in our FitTown family! Now let’s play a game of FitTown Kickball!!! (Read Ben’s full story on our blog if you’re wondering why)

Tell us a little about yourself and the life of Ben Miller.

Originally from Virginia, I moved to south Florida in 2005 after a work leadership program opened my eyes to balance in my life and making the most of the time outside of work. After living outside of Philadelphia and Washington, DC frustrated with the traffic and cold rainy weather, I decided to look for a place where I wanted to live, and then find a place to work. I picked 3 locations that all had water access, either lakes or rivers, and were all further south to benefit from longer boating seasons. Needless to say, I ended up here.

Here is where I met my wife, Tanya Kekki, who is from Toronto and has recently joined BeachFit. We have a wonderful daughter named Teegan who turns 5 later this month.

With a BS in civil engineering and MS in construction engineering and management (both from Virginia Tech), I currently manage a medium heavy/civil contracting company based out of Stuart that builds infrastructure such as underground utilities and roads. An everchanging work environment, as no two jobs are ever the same, it comes with long, unpredictable work hours. Add a wife and child to the mix, you now know why I’m at the gym at 5:40AM while everyone else in the house is sleeping.

What hobbies do you enjoy outside the gym?

On the weekends, If I’m not fixing something around the house, I’m on the water in my boat either wakeboarding and/or wake surfing. My daughter finds it entertaining when I wipe out.

I’ve been into sports starting with the swim team at 4 years old. I swam, played soccer, football, and wrestled throughout the school years. After school came the box gyms and then there was WAKA (world adult kickball association). Founded in the DC area as a sports social league when I lived up there, when I moved to Florida, I actually started the first WAKA league in West Palm Beach in 2005. And that is how I met my wife.

What was your fitness background before FitTown and what brought you in?

Roughly 10 years ago I started doing CrossFit and absolutely loved the variety of workouts and group environment. As I got stronger and weights and movements increased, I found myself dealing with pain, not just soreness, as a result of the workouts that were affecting what I was doing outside of the gym, like picking up my daughter or wakeboarding. My wife, being a chiropractor and treating my ailments, was tired of treating the same issues over and over. So I left the CrossFit world and joined a small gym that was similar to BeachFit with regards to a focus on quality movements and no barbells. This particular gym changed their style and as a result, several of their clients left and some found their way to BeachFit. I was hearing goods things, so I decided to give it a try and I am glad I did.

Do you have any positive results in fitness to brag on yourself about?

I don’t brag on myself, except to my wife in fun. I’ve joined BeachFit with a goal to be healthy so I can get as many good years as I can to spend with my wife and daughter.

Our word of the month is CONFIDENCE. Can you talk about what that means to you?

Confidence for me in the gym is knowing that I can survive any workout that is on the board if I take it one rep at a time; knowing that all I have to do is keep moving until either the timer stops or the reps are done. Motivation sometimes comes in the form of “for time”, knowing the harder you push, the sooner you will finish. Other times it comes from the person next to you or the entire class around you going through the same workout as you.

What has been your most memorable workout at FitTown?

The most memorable workout at FitTown is probably the Spartan I just did this month for the first time. I remember running out to start the 3rd mile and the only thing I could think about was having to finish with 60 burpees. It was definitely the toughest workout I’ve done with FitTown, both mentally and physically. Can’t wait to do it again next year!
